I'm a writer with four novels and more than two dozen short stories published. The best known is probably my novel China Mountain Zhang. A collection of my short stories, called Mothers and Other Monsters, was published by Small Beer Press in July '05.

And it's got the original cast members (Ivan Dixon instead of Kenneth Washington for the token black dude). I used to LOVE this show as a kid. As an adult it sort of bugs me that they made all the Germans look like idiots and morons.
But to your point - yes, our society seems to happily accept death and evil to make a buck.
