Oh Pioneer!

I'm headed off to Taos, New Mexico tomorrow. Since New Mexico is the next state over, I though I'd drive. It turns out that when you live in Texas, 'the next state over' is quite a ways. It's fourteen hours to Taos and much of it looks as if it is the kind of place where you watch for 'last gas for 200 miles' kind of signs. I drive to Lubbock, Texas and then that's the last sign of civilization until Clovis. (Not counting Muleshoe. I don't know, can you count Muleshoe?)

My understanding is that if Lubbock is civilization, things are bad.

After Clovis I head for Las Vegas, New Mexico, and then take something called NM65 to NM518 through Sapello and, astonishingly enough, Cleveland, New Mexico.

I have my story ready for critique. I have my cookbooks packed and a bunch of ribeye steaks in a cooler and a 12 pack of Diet Pepsi if things get dicey. I've never seen West Texas but I think I'll see a lot of it. I'll have my computer and may actually check the internet from Taos. Then again, if I'm having a really good time, I may not.

Drove through Las Vegas, New Mexico once, back in 1970. My dad had got it confused with the other one, and had changed our route to pass through when we moved from Minnesota to San Diego, California.

Wow, was he disappointed.

Have a great trip!!! When I was in college I drove from Boise, ID to Anaheim by myself. Took me two days traveling all day. I remember being rather fearless about it at the time despite the fact that I drove on a road which was marked by a sign that said, "The Loneliest Road in America." WOW the sign was right. Not a sign of any life (just lots of rabbit roadkill) for about 50 miles straight. Flat sagebrush all the way. It was actually kind of cool. :) And freaky!

Have a great trip!

Next week I embark on a road trip from Arizona to Ohio. Somehow at the end of it I wind up on an island.

America is weird.

Maureen, I was in Las Vegas, NM, last year for a house tour. They have a number of really nice Victorian homes, left over from the era when Las Vegas was an important railroad town.

Walter and I have speculated that it would even be a nice place to live, if only we could convince about 19 of our nearest and dearest friends to move there, too. As it stands, Las Vegas is too far from our social life to be really appealing.

Happy driving!

My selfish hopes that you will post about your Taos adventures are battling with my unselfish hopes that you have so much fun you don't even remember you have a blog until somewhere on the eastbound drive.

No matter what, I do hope you have a splendid time and eat much delicious food!
