Smith and Shelly

It's my blog. If I want to post sentimental pictures of my pets, I can. (Thank God my stories are edited.)

Can a reader assume that Shelly was the model for the dog in "Laika Comes Back Safe"?

I heard your reading of that story in Seattle and very much enjoyed it. Well, if enjoy is the right word for such a sad tale. After thinking about it for a while (long after the reading ended) I wanted to ask if the seeming metaphor of lycanthropy for mental illness was an intentional choice and if so whether you had a specific motivation for that choice. I guess that might be kind of a personal question, so no worries if you don't want to answer.

Jeffy, I can't say that the big dog was exactly a model for the dog in laika comes back safe, but obviously, yeah, I love my dog and that's where Brittany's relationship with her German Shepherd Lacey comes from.

I don't have a specific motivation for the lycanthropy/mental illness thing. I just found the idea of two kids who were so trapped in their lives that they were willing to believe in lycanthropy to be really interesting, and I think, oddly true.

Chance, you bet I will be at WFC. Are you going? How's your novel?

Chris! Do you have my email address? I have a new computer, email me so I have your address?

Puppies!

(I wouldn't bother making excuses. Friday pet blogging has a long and glorious tradition, anyway.)
